Philosophical Chinese Calligraphy Workshops:

Level 2: 8-Week Course

(2-hour sessions once a week)

This course is a continuation of Level 1. Chinese Calligraphy is an art and a discipline that we can continuously deepen. Explore further the philosophy behind this art, deepen your practice and experience the benefits of this inner training.

Level 2 Course Outline:


Week 1: Vision Drives Action

  • Learn about the vision that inspires the practice of Chinese Calligraphy.
  • Heaven, Earth and the Human Being.
  • Teachings of Tao – polarities of yin and yang.
 

Week 2: Discipline of Disciplines

  • Various applications of Chinese calligraphy.
  • Work on mental concentration, discipline and inner mastery.
  • Teachings from Buddhism, the Voice of the Silence, and the Bhagavad Gita.
 

Week 3: Ethics and Aesthetics

  • The relationship between inner and outer beauty.
  • The importance of inner cultivation of ethics.
  • Practise writing and meditation on virtues.
 

Week 4: Elegance in Simplicity

  • Learn more principles behind composing a Chinese character with beauty, elegance and grace
  • Develop appreciation of the art of calligraphy.
  • Develop your inner senses.
 

Week 5: Harmony in Health

  • Different styles of writing throughout history, different calligraphy masters.
  • Learn more Chinese characters and practise writing them.
 

Week 6: Unity in Diversity

  • Different styles of writing throughout history, different calligraphy masters.
  • Learn more Chinese characters and practise writing them.
 

Week 7: Timeless Wisdom

  • A teaching is as good as how we practise it
  • Learn phrases of wisdom and teachings for everyday living.
  • Philosophy as a way of life.
 

Week 8: Creating Future

  • Learn from the past and build the future.
  • Chinese Calligraphy today and worldwide.
  • Qualities for creating a new and better future.
 


Instructor: Sui-Yung Tung

Sui-Yung Tung was first introduced to Chinese Calligraphy in Hong Kong as a young student. Fascinated by the symbolism and beauty of Chinese characters, she continues her study and practice of Chinese calligraphy in Canada. With her philosophical training at New Acropolis, she is able to explore further the wisdom contained in the art of Chinese Calligraphy. It is her desire to share the timeless teachings of this ancient art with people interested in beauty and harmony, and in the development of human values.
